The situation was clear before the final League match away at Marlborough on Monday 26 March. A match win would ensure that Kingsdown could not be caught by other title contenders who still had matches to play.
This match had already been postponed once due to adverse course conditions at Marlborough and today’s match was also in doubt with Marlborough being on all temporary greens up until the morning of the match. The weather was kind (and thankfully dry) and the match went ahead on all main greens.
First out were Paul Bloomfield and Nigel Gumm against County regular, and Marlborough Captain, Per-Axel Warensjo and Nick Chapman. After an early success, Kingsdown were pegged back but held on and sealed the first point with a close 2 and 1 win.
Our second pair of Mike Bullock and Nigel Phillips had a slightly more comfortable match against Geoff Laney and Nick Munton and closed it out 4 and 3.
At this point the third Kingsdown pair of Jim Norton and team Captain Steve Kelley were struggling against a birdie barrage from the Marlborough duo of Jim Roberts and Glenn Blakeley.
As is usual in these matches, there are signals between team players in the three matches indicating the state of play. With the team very aware of the need to secure the two points needed to win the League outright, the top two pairs decided to give the team Captain a very hard time by giving incorrect signals !!!! With the Captain and Jim down in their match this was not what he wanted to hear and suffice to say that there will be fines imposed on the perpetrators of this heinous crime !!!!
All was soon forgiven when it became clear that the two wins had indeed been secured and the League Trophy will spend a third successive year in the Kingsdown trophy cabinet.
I must record my grateful thanks to all the squad for their support and excellent play through yet another tough campaign. I would also like to thank all those squad members who did not get to play but still gave the teams massive support. Finally a big thankyou to James, Charlie, Kayleigh and all the staff from JJ catering for feeding us so well again.
